Hi builders — a quick update from us.

Recently, I received a very kind and thoughtful email from @steipete, the founder of OpenClaw, suggesting that we change our organization name to avoid confusion with their official project and trademark. The message was friendly, respectful, and completely fair.

So we’ve decided to rename the organization.

New name: Effector

and new logo

(previous version in legacy)

This is mainly a name change. The work we care about remains the same, but this moment also gives us a good opportunity to clarify our direction a bit more precisely.


What we are actually building

Our goal is to support the emerging ecosystem around Proactive AI Harnesses.

Over the last few years, frontier model labs have made enormous progress on the brain of AI: reasoning, coding, planning, multimodal understanding, and long-context intelligence. That part of the stack has advanced extremely quickly.

What is now emerging is the next layer: the body.

Runtimes like OpenClaw and Claude Agent SDK are part of that shift. In practice, they assemble the operational environment around the model: an initializer agent sets up the working environment, a coding agent drives incremental progress, and progress files allow state to persist across sessions. Together, these pieces give models something like an operational body: a workspace, an execution loop, and the ability to observe, act, remember, and continue tasks over time.

In that sense, OpenClaw represents one of the earliest bodies for proactive AI, similar to the *first Jaegers in Pacific Rim***. Those early machines were massive experimental platforms: powerful, but still evolving, with many systems built directly into the frame. Over time, the ecosystem around them matured, adding better modules, tools, and operational layers. We think AI runtimes today are in a similar stage.

What we are focused on is the layer that gives these systems practical reach in the world — the hands:

  • skills
  • extensions
  • workflows
  • developer tools
  • plugins
  • surrounding infrastructure
  • even prompts

In simple terms:

We build the hands for AI that moves first.


Why the name Effector

We use the name Effector because we believe it describes an important category that is starting to emerge.

In biology and robotics, an end effector is the part of a system that turns intention into action. It is the component that actually interacts with the world.

That is exactly the layer we care about.

If large models represent the brain, and runtimes form the early body, then effectors are the action layer, reusable capability units that allow an AI system to operate in real environments.

An effector can take many forms:

  • a skill
  • a plugin
  • a prompt package
  • a workflow
  • a bridge to another system
  • a piece of developer tooling
  • a reusable execution pattern

So Effector is not just the new name of the organization. It is also the category we hope to help define.


What is changing — and what is not

We are moving from a more OpenClaw-branded identity to a more independent foundation.

Which introduces a small shift in framing and specification, but not a change in the core work.

What stays the same:

  • we improve tooling
  • we refine definitions and standards
  • we help the ecosystem become more robust, reusable, and easier to contribute to
  • we support builders

What becomes clearer now:

  • we are not only thinking about a single repo or runtime
  • we want to support each generation of runtime, including OpenClaw today
  • we want to define an Effector Spec
  • we want to provide the quality infrastructure around that spec
  • we want to occupy the infrastructure layer in this new ecosystem

So yes — this is mainly a name change, but it also sharpens the framework behind the project.


Our architectural view

Our current view is roughly this:

1. Model labs developed the brain

The last wave of progress gave AI stronger reasoning, stronger coding ability, stronger planning, and stronger multimodal intelligence.

2. Runtimes are building the body

Systems like OpenClaw represent an early runtime/body layer for proactive AI. They provide the loop, memory, workspace, and execution environment that allow intelligence to persist and act.

You can think of this as the first generation of the mecha era: early bodies that require many capabilities to be built directly into them.

3. The ecosystem now needs effectors

As these runtimes evolve, the ecosystem needs a reusable and portable action layer:

  • definitions
  • interfaces
  • capability units
  • quality checks
  • packaging patterns
  • developer workflows

That is where we want to work.

4. We want to define the infrastructure layer

Our intention is to define an Effector framework and eventually an Effector Spec that can organize and connect:

  • maybe skills
  • maybe plugins
  • maybe even prompts
  • maybe something new
  • workflows
  • developer tooling
  • compatibility layers with adjacent ecosystems

This matters because the future likely will not belong to a single runtime. Different bodies will appear. Different architectures will mature. But the action layer can still become more standard, more portable, and more composable.

That is the position we want to build toward.


Our relationship with the OpenClaw ecosystem

At this stage, our work is still closely connected to the OpenClaw ecosystem.

OpenClaw is one of the earliest and most important infrastructures in this space, and many of the ideas, tools, and experiments we are exploring naturally begin there. We are still building from that starting point and remain aligned with the goal of helping this ecosystem grow.

At the same time, we also believe this layer should become more universal over time.

So our current direction is:

  • start from OpenClaw
  • support the current generation of runtime
  • remain compatible with the ecosystem around it
  • gradually define a broader Effector framework that can work across future systems

We are also actively communicating with the OpenClaw community and exploring further conversations with @steipete and other OpenClaw ecosystem maintainers.

Our hope is to seek more collaboration and support at this stage, and to build good new things that can grow together with the ecosystem in a mutually beneficial way.


Documentation updates

We have also pushed a number of quick updates to the local documentation to refine some definitions, clean up language, and clarify the project’s positioning.

Some of these are small edits, but together they make the direction of the project clearer and more solid.
